Some of you believe that their watch has a defect because the LCD screen doesn’t occupy all the surface like an Apple Watch®. 

This phenomenon is only visible when you don’t face the watch directly.


Please note that there is no issue with the display. Early in the campaign, when moving from the prototype to product design and establishing the BOM (list of components), we faced the issue that the original display would not be supplied anymore. The consequence was a complete redesign, a new display and new watch size (which we shared with you in August 2016 https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/octopusbyjoy/the-icon-based-watch-that-young-kids-can-read-and/posts/1657704).
The consequence, however, is a larger display (1" instead of 0.96") with more pixels and colors. 


The display is located so that, when front-facing the watch whether in landscape (on the wrist) or in portrait (on the companion, or charging), icons are centered perfectly and that the user would not be disturbed by the active/non-active parts of the display.

PROS

  • displays 262K colors, 

  • measures only 23.75 x 23.15 mm but has a large 1.0” active diagonal display area

  • has a depth of only 1.70 mm,

  • has an active area with 128 horizontal by 96 vertical pixel array,

  • electrical consumption is very low.


CONS


  • viewing direction (human eye) is 40/40/45/20. It means that if you look from an angle, and especially from the bottom (see picture above) the colors change.

  • driver IC is attached at the bottom of the screen.



Unfortunately, if we want the screen to be perfectly centered, then we need to add extra space at the top to compensate the space occupied by the driver IC, and therefore the watch would be too big.


From the beginning, our concept is to display icons at the center of the watch + the time above. We don’t need the bottom of the screen to display anything.

We decided to offset the TFT screen to the top so that we could optimize the position of the other electronic components on the motherboard (PCB) like the motor and the battery without compromising the main feature of the watch.

PROTOTYPES

During the prototyping phase, the watch was bigger. The screen was in portrait mode instead of landscape mode. You may have seen videos on our Kickstarter page or on the internet with this configuration.

It was too big for the small wrists of the children. We wanted to be the smallest smartwatch on the market.
